Dr. Niels Grobbe to Receive SEG Karcher Award

October 26, 2021

ERL is thrilled to share the news that a former member of our lab, Dr. Niels Grobbe, will receive this year’s prestigious Karcher award from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Niels was a Postdoctoral Associate in ERL and the MIT Department of Mathematics from 2016-2017, before joining the faculty of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is now a research scientist at the Dutch regulator State Supervision of Mines. His recent work has focused on the potential use of seismoelectric effects for inferring lithology and fluid properties in the subsurface.

SEG’s J. Clarence Karcher Award is awarded "in recognition of significant contributions to the science and technology of exploration geophysics by a young geophysicist of outstanding abilities.” Niels is the latest of several ERL-affiliated researchers who have received the award, including former ERL postdoc Xinding Fang (now on the faculty of SUSTech), ERL research affiliate and former postdoc Yunyue Elita Li (now on the faculty of Purdue), former ERL postdoc and research scientist Yingcai Zheng (now on the faculty of U. Houston), and former ERL faculty-member Alison Malcolm (now on the faculty of Memorial U. Newfoundland).
