FISH: Yingcai Zheng: Deep earthquake seismic radiation problems and solutions

Feb 17, 2017 - 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM EST

Speaker:

Prof. Ynigcai Zheng (U. Houston)

Yingcai Zheng, Asiistant Professor at U. Houston, presents "Deep earthquake seismic radiation problems and solutions".

"It is well known that a shear dislocation faulting mechanism produces double-couple seismic-wave radiation. However, in the past ~50 years, with growing seismic data and analysis methods, people have documented worldwide that a large number of deep earthquakes were not double-couples. This reinforced the belief that deep earthquake source processes are fundamentally different from shallow earthquakes. In this talk, I will give an overview about this issue and propose a solution. I will also discuss its link with the slab structure, mineralogy, and geodynamics."
