Abstract

Dr. Jide Ogunbo, Postdoctoral Associate in the MIT Earth Resources Lab, presents "Near-surface seismic and EM imaging" on February 26, 2016. This video contains most of the presentation, but the final slides and Q&A have been excluded because they contained proprietary field data.

"Interpretation of the subsurface geology by a single geophysical method is inherently and helplessly bedeviled by non-uniqueness. Joint inversion of multiple complementary geophysical data sets is one way confidence in interpretation can be improved. We present joint seismic traveltime and frequency airborne electromagnetic (FAEM) inversion for near-surface imaging. We enforce a structural constraint on the seismic data acquired over a 2D geometry and the FAEM data over multiple 1D geometry. Satisfactory results are obtained from both synthetic and field data experiments with the joint inversion velocity model yielding better statics corrections than standalone velocity inversion."
