Water

Identifying and managing sufficient supplies of fresh water in the subsurface are now recognized as one of the major challenges for society going forward.  ERL researchers are using their expertise to assist in finding supplies of safe drinking water.  For example, this January, the Applied Geophysics Field Camp provided solutions for a safe water supply for community in St. Lucia while providing ERL students an outstanding educational experience.  Time-lapse geodetic and seismic imaging are being used to estimate aquifer properties and water budgets, while quantitative models are making it apparent how overproduction of aquifers can trigger earthquakes.
