Biographical Overview
Dr. Montgomery completed his PhD in 2019 as part of the MIT Computational Science & Engineering (CSE) program and the MIT Energy Initiative and Geonumerics group. He is now chief data scientist at Adapt Intelligence, Inc. His research at MIT focused on using machine learning and statistical modeling approaches to improve the forecasting of unconventional oil and gas well production rates. These probabilistic data-driven models can be used to guide decision-making—such as well design and placement—and to evaluate resource economics and availability. Dr. Montgomery has presented his research at the US EIA and has been featured in Bloomberg Businessweek and the Journal of Petroleum Technology. He has worked on a range of analytics projects for the petroleum industry and he created shalestats.com, an open platform for evaluating Bakken well economics. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University and an S.M. in Technology and Policy from MIT.
