Ali Dogru, Chief Technologist and Fellow at Aramco presents “Recent Advances in Large Scale Simulation of Multiphase Flow in Porous Media.”

“Numerical simulation of multiphase flow in large porous structures has made significant progress recently with the  advancement of giant super computers.

This presentation will cover a large-scale CO2 sequestration model with several hundred million cells to billions of cells for thousands of years of prediction. Due to the efficient parallelization methods used in the simulator some runs can be obtained during the working hours.

The presentation will also include  a new nonlinear solution method which enables us to handle very small grid blocks with less than a few cubic feet pore volume with accuracy and speed . The time step size can be as large as a month. This capability allows us to simulate multiphase flow in large fractures with high computational speed.

Finally, the presentation will include the run statistics for a 370 billion cell model for multiphase flow in porous media using 320 thousand cores of a supercomputer.”
