  • Robust Extraction of Useful Information from Seismic Measurements

Geophysicists rely on seismic data to understand the Earth’s subsurface. Data from seismic receivers contains two types of information convoluted into a single signal: information about the source of the signal (source effects) and information about the subsurface features it passed through on its way to the receiver (path effects). Current methods for separating out… read more…

  • Longtime ERL Researcher Dr. Yves Bernabé Retires

Congratulations to longtime ERL researcher, Dr. Yves Bernabé, on his recent retirement. During a distinguished research career, Yves focused his work on the interrelationships among fluid transport, water-rock interactions, and mechanical behavior. This knowledge is essential for evaluating the risks and benefits of technologies including hydrofracking, geothermal energy, and carbon sequestration. After receiving a third-cycle… read more…

  • Researchers solve mystery of how gas bubbles form in liquid

Findings show how to make confined bubbles develop uniformly, instead of in their usual scattershot way. MIT News features work by ERL faculty-member Prof. Ruben Juanes and recent alumnus Dr. Amir Pahlavan. David L. Chandler | MIT News OfficeJune 17, 2019 The formation of air bubbles in a liquid appears very similar to its inverse… read more…
