Jonathan Simpson

Postdoctoral Associate

PhD, Physics, University of Auckland, 2023
MS, Geophysics, University of Auckland, 2019
BSC (Hons), Geophysics, University of Auckland, 2017

Biographical Overview:

Dr. Jonathan Simpson is a postdoctoral associate working in Prof. Matěj Peč’s group on the rock physics aspects of carbon mineralization in basalt. In 2023 he completed his PhD at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where he was investigating the dynamic nonlinear elastic properties of rocks using a novel laser ultrasonics apparatus. In his current research at MIT, Jonathan is studying how precipitation of carbonate minerals affects the elastic and hydraulic properties of basalt, with the goal of better understanding and optimizing the permanent storage of carbon dioxide in the earth.

Research Areas:
Rock Physics & Chemistry
Applications:
Hydrogen Storage, CO2 Sequestration
